Enclosure No. 1 to Despatch No. 108 of 3rd March, 1902.

15023

From

The General Officer Commanding

REC
in China and Hongkong, REG 23 APR 2

To

His Excellency

Sir

The Officer Administering the Government
of Hongkong.

Head Quarters,
Hongkong, 13th March, 1902.

I have the honour to forward enclosed application for the payment of rates for certain houses leased to the War Department, and beg to observe that the question of exemption of rates recently submitted to the Right Honourable His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies only referred to houses hired by Officers in their private capacity.

The premises for which rates are now claimed are in occupation of the War Department as Barracks and therefore apparently are not liable to be assessed for rates.

I have etc.,

(sgd.) J. Gascoigne,
Major-General,
Commanding in China and Hongkong.
